Unscripted and Unstoppable: Higherlife Foundation celebrates girls around the world

1.1 billion girls.

1 world.

Unlimited dreams. Girls, you can do anything!

At Higherlife Foundation, we are firm believers in the power of girls as catalysts for positive change, and we joined the world in celebrating the achievements by, with and for girls across the world on October 11 2019.

Girls empowerment
Throughout her work with Higherlife Foundation, our Co-Chair Tsitsi Masiyiwa’s dedication to women and girls remains steadfast.

Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight the challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. In all its programs and initiatives, Higherlife Foundation fosters gender equality and champions inclusive and open societies where girls are empowered to fully participate and make meaningful contributions to their families, communities and nations.

In commemoration of the day:

  • We celebrated all girls who have excelled in various faculties against all the odds.
  • We celebrated these unstoppable girls who continue to transform their communities despite the harsh living conditions.
  • We celebrated girls who continue to promote girls’ rights and highlight gender inequalities that remain between girls and boys.
  • We celebrated the reinforcement of our new Girls Empowerment department, which seeks to create an enabling environment for girls to enjoy equity and equality and contribute meaningfully to the transformation of their communities.

The Girls Empowerment department also partnered with ROOTS – a non-profit organisation working towards the promotion of economic and social justice among young people in peri-urban, rural and mining communities – to celebrate the girls in Bindura and empower them through mentorship sessions and presentations on the importance of handwashing.

The teams also called upon Higherlife Foundation members to donate sanitary pads and toiletries, as a means to ensure that the girls we support remain in school. All items collected were distributed to girls in a school with the highest dropout rate.

Throughout the world, the day was marked with events that celebrated the upholding of girls’ rights and recognized the unique challenges girls face around the world under the theme GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable.

“We need to uphold the equal rights, voices and influence of girls in our families, communities and nations. Girls can be powerful agents of change, and nothing should keep them from participating fully in all areas of life, ” stated UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his message for 2019.

Stay tuned for more from our Girl’s Empowerment teams as we continue to share their initiatives and activities.
