Our story begins in the high-density area of Epworth, which is on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s capital city, Harare. This is where we find streets bustling with market traders and vendors selling produce and parts, commuter omnibuses whizzing to and from the neighbourhood and the city centre.
Amidst the fast-paced haste, we find a young girl named Tariro, who, at the fragile age of six, has lost both her mother and father to cholera. Tari, as she was affectionately known by her family, has moved in with her next of kin; her relative Babamukuru Sedekene, who has three daughters of his own, all in high school.
Despite having a happy early childhood, Tari’s recent trauma and displacement has affected her learning; teachers in nursery school have noted a stunt in her education’s progression. Becoming a member of a new household has also posed as a challenge for Tari, amidst the unresolved grief from losing both her parents.
Babamukuru Sedekene is concerned that Tari’s academic future is going to be terribly affected by all of this and seeks out advice from a teacher at his youngest daughter’s high school. He learns about Higherlife Foundation and the scholarships they offer for orphaned and vulnerable children. Babamukuru Sedekene during his break from work visits Higherlife Foundation’s website to inquire on how Tariro can benefit from one such scholarship.
It is through this platform that Tari becomes a part of the Capernaum Scholarship. This small decision taken by Tariro’s babamukuru becomes the stepping stone to the bright future Tari is empowered to pave.
